How to Handle Fear byStepping Out of Fearful Thinking

Fear arises not from actual present events but from imagined future scenarios spinning through the mind. When you recognize that fearful thinking is involuntary, produces no useful outcome, and exists only in imagination, you gain the freedom to redirect attention away from thought and into the aliveness of your body. This shift from mind to presence dissolves the psychological suffering that fear creates—not by fighting the thoughts, but by withdrawing your attention from them and anchoring it in the felt sense of the present moment.

What Is the Nature of Fearful Thinking?

Most of what causes suffering in fear is not an actual event happening right now. Instead, it is the mind's projection of things that have not yet happened and may never happen. The mind says: "You might lose your job. You might get sick. You might lose a loved one." The assumed logic is that if you worry enough, think about it enough, you will be prepared. But this is a delusion.

Tolle points out a critical truth: "If they did happen you would face the situation you have with the power of your conscious awareness... But what you cannot do is overcome these problems or face them because they only exist in your imagination." The problems you fear are not real problems you can solve through thinking. They exist only as narratives in your mind. The more you think about them, "the more they become amplified." You are creating psychological suffering in the present moment over something that is not happening.

This is why fearful thinking has a particular insidiousness. Before awareness, there is an unconscious assumption in the mind that "unless you worry a lot... then you're not controlling your life." The underlying delusion is that worry and fearful thinking hold things together—that if you stop thinking about the problem, your life will fall apart. But the opposite is true.

Are You Doing This to Yourself, or Is It Happening to You?

One of the most liberating realizations is that you are not voluntarily generating fearful thoughts. Tolle says: "The thoughts in your mind, virtually all the thoughts in the absence of awareness, happen to you. They are not voluntary." When you are not aware, you are possessed by the thought-stream. You are at its mercy. The thought-energy lives in you, and without awareness, you don't recognize this possession is happening.

This is crucial because the moment you realize "I'm not doing this, it's happening to me," something shifts. You move from a sense of guilt ("I'm making myself suffer") to a clear seeing of what is actually occurring. The fearful thoughts belong to what Tolle calls "the self-serving forms that are swirling around in my mind continuously." These thought-patterns have no useful purpose. They don't help you or anyone else. They don't even prepare you for the imagined disaster—they only amplify your suffering now.

Once you see this with clarity, you have a choice. Before awareness, there was no choice—you were compelled by the thought-stream. With awareness, freedom emerges.

Can You Fight Your Way Out of Fear?

A common mistake is trying to stop fearful thoughts through willpower or fighting. Tolle is clear: "You cannot fight it if you fight it you make it stronger you give it added energy." When you struggle against fearful thinking, you are actually feeding it, giving it more of your attention and energy. This is why New Year's resolutions fail, why meditation techniques that demand "stop thinking" often backfire, and why reassurance-seeking loops persist in anxiety.

The fearful thinking "does not want to end—you need to know that it has a momentum and you cannot fight it." But you can do something else entirely. You cannot stop the thoughts through force, but you can withdraw your attention from them. This is radically different from fighting or suppressing.

What Is the First Step to Freedom from Fear?

The first step is recognition of the futility and destructive nature of fearful thinking. You must see clearly that this narrative-spinning is not helping you. Many people live with a background assumption that this thinking is necessary. But when you recognize it is destructive and produces only unhappiness, something shifts. You begin to see "that a lot of the unhappiness is produced by the narratives in your mind."

At that moment, you have a choice: "You can continue being dragged along in the stream of fearful thinking or you can say my choice is now to take my attention away from fearful thinking." This choice is not made through gritted teeth or heroic effort. It is a simple decision: I don't want to go that way anymore.

Where Do You Move Your Attention Instead?

Once you have made the choice to withdraw from fearful thinking, the next crucial step is to direct your attention somewhere else. If you simply create a void and tell yourself "don't think," the fear will rush back in. But if you anchor your attention in something present and alive, something that is actually here now, then the fearful narrative loses its grip.

Tolle's primary recommendation is to direct attention into the inner body. "Feel the aliveness in your body. Direct your attention instead of thinking, direct your attention into the inner energy field of your hands and then you hold it there." This is not something that requires willpower. It is "just a simple decision." You feel the inner aliveness in your hands and it becomes an anchor for stepping out of mind and into presence.

How do you do this? Close your eyes. Direct attention into your hands. Can you sense the energy there? Can you feel the tingling, the warmth, the subtle vibration that is always present in your hands when you direct attention to them? For many people, especially those who have been practicing this, "it's always fresh and new." It doesn't become dull or mechanical because you are drawing attention to something alive in the present moment.

If you cannot feel the energy in your hands, there is another approach. Ask yourself a simple question: "Is my left hand still there right now?" You cannot see it (perhaps your eyes are closed or it is out of view), but you know it is there. How do you know? Not through memory of seeing it a few seconds ago. You know because there is a felt sense of aliveness, of presence, in that location. This is your body's presence in the now. When you direct attention here, you move your consciousness out of the projecting, fearful mind and into the aliveness of the present.

What Happens When You Move Attention to the Inner Body?

As you practice directing attention to the aliveness in your hands, something expands. "You can feel both hands simultaneously and then you become aware of a all-pervasive sense of presence in your whole body." This is not imagination or visualization. It is direct perception of the energy or life-force that is always animating your body. You also become aware of your breathing. The more you become aware of your body, "the more you step out of thinking. This isn't like a mental exercise, because you cannot be aware of inner body and be lost in thought at the same time. It's not possible."

This is the mechanism: Consciousness has a limited bandwidth. It cannot simultaneously be identified with fearful thinking and be present in the felt sense of the body. By anchoring attention in the present moment—specifically in the aliveness of your physical form—you naturally withdraw the mental energy from the thought-stream. You don't have to kill the thoughts. You simply stop feeding them with your attention.

And here is what is crucial: the fearful thoughts may still arise, but they no longer have you. They are just sounds in the background, like traffic noise, not the central reality of your experience.

What Does the Enforced Stillness of Our Time Offer?

Tolle made this teaching during a period when the world was experiencing sudden, enforced stillness—a closure of business and activity on a global scale. He notes that "the world was absurdly busy... everything with movement, everything was noise... and suddenly as if somebody said let's turn it off for a while." This enforced pause, while accompanied by real challenges and fears, also offered something: "a possibility of an awakening for many if they can go beyond the fear."

The implication is that the absence of external busyness can create space for the inner stillness that many humans actually need. But that inner stillness is only possible if you can move beyond the fearful narratives the mind generates. The outer stillness is neutral; what matters is whether you use it as an opportunity to awaken to presence or whether you simply fill the quiet space with more anxious thinking.

Where to Go From Here

The practice is simple but requires consistent application. When you notice you are caught in fearful thinking—worry about money, job loss, illness, the suffering of others—pause. Recognize that this thinking is not voluntary; it is happening to you. See clearly that it produces no useful outcome and only amplifies suffering. Then, gently and decisively, withdraw your attention from the thought-stream. Direct it into the aliveness of your hands, your feet, your whole body. Feel your breathing. Feel the presence that is animating your body right now, in this moment, where nothing you fear is actually occurring. Stay here, in the present moment, for as long as you can. Not as a technique to "fix" your fear, but as a return home to what is always here.

[0:00] but when I get really afraid of losing

[0:03] all my money in the stock market of

[0:05] getting sick or losing a loved one how

[0:08] do I handle that fear again the question

[0:13] is about fear how to handle the fear of

[0:16] catching an ill disease of losing every

[0:19] many things many people are experiencing

[0:24] not only the fear now of the virus

[0:27] they're also experiencing the fear of

[0:29] the repercussions of what's happening

[0:31] businesses are closing down or

[0:33] everything is closing down it's a very

[0:35] strange thing that this is happening

[0:38] it's like an enforced closing down down

[0:42] of the base of the busyness that not

[0:45] just not just a business

[0:46] but the busyness of the world and

[0:50] enforced sudden ending of all that many

[0:56] planes are not flying anymore this it's

[0:59] some cities are empty of people or

[1:03] suddenly as if in because until this

[1:08] happened the world was absurdly busy one

[1:12] think after noisy busy everything with

[1:15] movement everything was lost in the

[1:18] world lost in their minds and suddenly

[1:20] as if somebody said let's let's turn it

[1:24] off for a while

[1:25] Oh enforced stillness almost exactly

[1:33] what millions of humans actually need to

[1:36] experience it doesn't mean that they

[1:40] will automatically also experience the

[1:42] inner stillness but there is an author

[1:44] is a possibility of of an awakening for

[1:48] many if they can go beyond the fear the

[1:53] fearful thoughts but how do you go

[1:59] beyond the fearful thoughts well it

[2:04] requires a little bit of awareness the

[2:09] but if you are here with us you probably

[2:12] have that

[2:14] that awareness that what I mean by that

[2:16] is the awareness what's going on in your

[2:20] mind to recognize rather than total

[2:25] identification with what's going on in

[2:27] your mind you have in the background an

[2:30] awareness of what's going on in your

[2:31] mind very different because it's a

[2:38] different consciousness dimension of

[2:41] consciousness the awareness it's not the

[2:43] same as a thought the awareness can

[2:46] recognize what thoughts are on your mind

[2:48] and you realize I'm thinking all these

[2:50] useful useless thoughts but that

[2:52] realization I'm verbalizing it now but

[2:56] because we are communicating through

[2:58] language but that realization that I'm

[3:01] you I'm this all these useless and

[3:04] destructive thoughts are going through

[3:05] my head that is a realization that is

[3:08] not verbal it's pre or post viable

[3:11] because it comes through the awareness

[3:13] and there's a simple recognition that

[3:17] what's going on in your mind is not

[3:19] helpful it's making you fearful and

[3:23] unhappy so it is to be tackled there all

[3:27] these the problem that he mentions he

[3:30] mentions or he or she mentions three

[3:33] fear of losing my money or my savings my

[3:38] investments would have been saving of

[3:41] getting sake or something bad could

[3:44] happen to a laughed one so you have fear

[3:47] for yourself your fear for others and of

[3:52] course all these things are not

[3:55] happening now the things that you fear

[3:58] but they could happen says the mind so I

[4:02] better think about it now because it is

[4:04] in case it does of course if they did

[4:07] happen you would face the situation you

[4:11] have with the power of your conscious

[4:14] awareness you would face the sickness

[4:18] you would face the loss of money and you

[4:21] would even face the loss of a loved one

[4:23] or the suffering of a loved one

[4:26] Wow of your presence you can face that

[4:29] but what you cannot do you cannot

[4:32] overcome these problems or face them

[4:35] because they only exist in your

[4:38] imagination

[4:39] they haven't even happened yet there's

[4:42] therefore there's absolutely nothing you

[4:45] can do about them in fact they will

[4:48] simply MP amplify the more you think

[4:52] about them the more they become

[4:54] amplified it's a totally illusory round

[4:57] that is making you suffer

[5:01] it's and so if there's a minimum

[5:04] awareness you can suddenly become aware

[5:07] of what it is that you are doing to

[5:10] yourself well it's not that you're

[5:13] voluntarily doing it to yourself but one

[5:17] could say it's it is happening to you so

[5:20] you become aware of what is happening to

[5:22] you because the thoughts in your mind

[5:28] virtually all the thoughts in the

[5:30] absence of awareness happen to you they

[5:34] are not voluntary

[5:36] so people to say I'm saying I think this

[5:40] I think you don't think the thinking

[5:43] happens to you in explain do when you're

[5:46] not aware you're at the mercy of thought

[5:50] you are the mercy of the energy field

[5:54] that's that that is that what we call

[5:58] thought it lives in you you are

[6:01] possessed you don't know it the moment

[6:06] you realize it that this is not the

[6:10] fearful thinking isn't something that

[6:13] you do because if you some that you do

[6:16] say yeah I'm doing it but I can't stop

[6:18] it no you are not doing it it happens to

[6:21] you so some people say well you perceive

[6:27] it is well I am I doing this to myself

[6:29] well that's already it's it's a good

[6:32] first step

[6:33] why am I making myself suffer by

[6:35] thinking all that and then the next step

[6:37] is you realize well it's not really

[6:40] me doing it it's the it it's the

[6:45] self-serving sort forms that are

[6:47] swirling around in my mind continuously

[6:51] that are making me unhappy that have no

[6:54] useful purpose I'm not helping myself or

[6:59] anybody by thinking these things by

[7:02] projecting bad things that could or will

[7:08] that could happen and so with the

[7:12] awareness of what's going on in your

[7:14] mind comes the first time a moment of

[7:18] freedom because before you had no free

[7:22] will without awareness you have no free

[7:27] well you're completely at the mercy of a

[7:29] conditioned mind so what do you do so

[7:33] you have recognized that what's been

[7:37] happening to you

[7:39] fulfills no useful purpose that's

[7:42] important realization because before you

[7:45] you there is a an assumption in the

[7:50] unconscious mind that unless you worry a

[7:53] lot you know then you're not controlling

[7:58] your life there is the delusion that the

[8:01] more you think about useless you don't

[8:04] you don't know it's useless the more you

[8:07] think about the your the problems of

[8:09] your life then you need to continue

[8:11] thinking in order to hold it all

[8:13] together you need to really borrow or

[8:16] the problem of the world if you don't

[8:19] worry the alive and fall to pieces is

[8:21] the underlying assumption of course it's

[8:24] a delusion

[8:25] so the worried the boring the fearful

[8:28] thinking does not want to end you need

[8:30] to know that that it has a momentum and

[8:32] you cannot fight it if you fight it you

[8:37] make it stronger

[8:39] you give it added energy so it's not

[8:43] it's not by willpower that you can stop

[8:46] it all oh as I just said you can stop it

[8:49] briefly but not along through exercising

[8:53] well

[8:54] so you stop it simply by first

[8:58] recognizing the not only the futility

[9:02] but also the destructive nature of that

[9:06] type of thinking and then you you can

[9:10] you begin to see that a lot of the

[9:13] unhappiness is produced by the

[9:18] narratives in your mind and at that

[9:24] moment you have a choice you can

[9:26] continue being dragged along in the

[9:32] stream of fearful thinking or you can

[9:35] say my choice is now to take my

[9:41] attention away from fearful thinking I'm

[9:44] verbalizing it and but where does it go

[9:48] if the fearful thinking once all your

[9:50] and it wants all their consciousness

[9:52] continuously it says no I'm letting go I

[9:55] want it and then you say no I don't want

[9:58] to go that way anymore

[10:00] it's very simple you bring your

[10:03] attention somewhere else you need

[10:05] something at first these should my

[10:09] recommendation is feel the failure in

[10:14] our body direct your attention let's say

[10:18] you wake up in the night or in the

[10:20] morning direct your attention instead of

[10:25] thinking direct your attention into the

[10:27] inner energy field of your hands and

[10:34] then you hold it there it's not doesn't

[10:37] require willpower it's just a simple

[10:39] decision and you hold it you feel the

[10:45] inner aliveness in your hands becomes an

[10:49] anchor for stepping out of mind being

[10:53] present

[10:59] can you feel the energy in your hands I

[11:02] can and it's always wonderful I've been

[11:06] feeling the energy mines for many years

[11:08] it's always fresh and new and I don't

[11:12] tire speaking of it because always fresh

[11:16] and new and of course it's not just the

[11:18] hands if you can't feel the energy in

[11:21] your hands close your eyes and ask

[11:24] yourself if you are let's say your right

[11:25] hand or your left hand at your left hand

[11:28] ask yourself if the if your left or

[11:31] right hand is still there not is it

[11:33] still there how do I know it's there how

[11:36] could I know it's there right now

[11:38] now you can't know it because you

[11:40] remember it was there when you saw it a

[11:41] few seconds ago that's not knowing that

[11:43] it's there because it might have

[11:45] disappeared you close your eyes you're

[11:47] not moving your hand how can you know

[11:49] it's there you can know it's there but

[11:55] how does that happen

[11:57] what is it how do you know it you can

[12:00] feel it but what is it that you feel you

[12:02] feel the energy within the hand it's

[12:07] very subtle at first so you need to be

[12:09] alert to feel it but that alertness that

[12:13] then goes in your body is taken away

[12:15] from thinking and it's it's and you

[12:20] suddenly there your hand feels more

[12:23] alive than it was before

[12:24] but in that's only the beginning you can

[12:27] feel both hands simultaneously and then

[12:33] you realize you can also feel other

[12:35] parts of the body look at your feet at

[12:37] the same time and legs and then you

[12:42] become aware of a all-pervasive sense of

[12:46] aliveness in the entire body

[12:48] energy field yep entered and the amazing

[12:53] thing is oh by the way you were you may

[12:56] also become aware that your breathing

[12:58] because that's connected with the body

[13:00] you're breathing into the body the

[13:05] breath flows in and it flows out and

[13:08] they more become aware of your body the

[13:10] more become aware of your breathing the

[13:11] more

[13:12] you become aware of your breathing they

[13:13] more become aware of the body this isn't

[13:17] the inter wonderful aliveness there and

[13:22] what happened to your mind activity its

[13:27] subsided almost completely or completely

[13:32] because you cannot be aware of inner

[13:36] body and at the same time think a few

[13:41] fragments maybe their thoughts but not

[13:44] not a sustained stream of thinking it's

[13:47] not possible because your attention your

[13:51] consciousness has gone away from the

[13:54] conceptualizing mind into the inner body

Worry and fearful thinking amplify suffering because the problems exist only in imagination, not in the present moment. Since they haven't happened yet, there is nothing you can actually do about them through thinking. The more you think about imagined disasters, the more you reinforce neural patterns of fear and multiply your suffering now, over something that is not real.
Rather than fighting the thoughts, you redirect your attention away from them entirely. By anchoring your awareness in the felt sense of your body—the energy in your hands, the sensation of breathing, the aliveness of your present physical form—you naturally withdraw mental energy from the thought-stream, since consciousness cannot simultaneously be lost in fearful thinking and fully present in the body.
Without awareness, you are at the mercy of the thought-energy that arises in your mind. The thoughts are involuntary patterns, not conscious choices. The moment you recognize this—'I'm not doing this, it's happening to me'—you shift from guilt and self-blame to clear seeing, which is the first step toward genuine freedom.
Yes. If you can't feel energy sensations, ask yourself: 'Is my left hand still there right now?' Even without seeing it, you know it exists through a direct sense of presence or aliveness at that location. This subtle knowing is the felt sense of your body in the present moment and serves as an anchor to step out of thinking.
Awareness is a dimension of consciousness that can recognize what thoughts are arising without being identified with them. Thought is the content itself. With awareness, you can see, 'I am thinking fearful and useless thoughts,' and in that seeing comes freedom—because you are no longer possessed by the thought-stream, you are observing it.
Consciousness has limited bandwidth. You cannot be fully present in the felt aliveness of your body and simultaneously be lost in fearful thinking about future catastrophes. By directing attention to what is real and here now—your breathing, the energy in your hands, your physical presence—you naturally step out of the mind's projections into the present moment where fear dissolves.
The goal is not to eliminate all fearful thoughts, but to stop being identified with them and dragged along by them. Once you redirect attention to your body, the thoughts may still arise, but they become like background noise rather than the central reality of your experience. Freedom is not the absence of thoughts but freedom from being controlled by them.
