Kadampa Meditation Centre Brisbane — 109 Leichhardt St, Australia
Buddhist meditation centre in Spring Hill, Brisbane, teaching peace and happiness through ancient wisdom
Kadampa Meditation Centre Brisbane sits on the edge of Brisbane's CBD in Spring Hill, a modern meditation space designed as a peaceful oasis. The centre is dedicated to bringing peace and happiness to the people of Brisbane and Queensland by teaching how to develop peaceful, positive states of mind, leading to greater well-being and fewer problems in daily life. Through sharing the ancient wisdom of Buddhist meditation, the centre aims to inspire and empower modern people to reach their full spiritual potential in order to be of greatest benefit to their family, friends and the world.
The physical space reflects this mission. The meditation room is carpeted and soundproofed, with air conditioning and purified air. Seating is available on comfortable chairs or meditation cushions on the floor. The centre maintains social distancing, features a hearing loop, and is wheelchair accessible. The extraordinary Kadampa Temple for World Peace is housed within the centre, serving as a focal point for practice and ceremony.
The centre operates as a not-for-profit organisation and provides a relaxed environment in which people from all walks of life can discover the benefits of meditation and modern Buddhism. Weekly classes run across multiple Brisbane locations and times, from free lunchtime meditation sessions to evening and morning classes. The centre also includes a gift and bookshop stocking meditation and Buddhism books written by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, as well as meditation CDs, audio books, Buddhist images, statues, ritual implements, and other items.
Beyond regular classes, the centre offers structured learning through its Foundation Program, an enrolled study program that systematically explores six Buddhist texts over multiple sessions. Retreats range from one-day Refuge Retreats to weekend silent meditation retreats held in locations like the Glass House Mountains, where participants stay in converted railway carriages and charming rooms while meditating in a converted church. Special workshops address practical topics such as dealing with difficult people and understanding relationships through Buddhist teachings.
The centre serves families and children through dedicated Meditation and Buddhism for Kids classes on Sundays, and extends its reach through regional branches in the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba. All programs emphasize the practical application of Buddhist wisdom to everyday life—stress, worry, emotional habits, relationships, and the search for real happiness.
